When You Feel Overwhelmed

You feel overwhelmed. The world is crashing down on you.

In the chaos, you’re searching for answers. You’re praying for clarity.

Have you ever felt this way? I have. Every year there’s a point where I feel as if I’m drowning in a sea of unfinished assignments, neglected responsibilities, and job issues. I always come to this point where all I can do is cry out to God.

If I could only  “get on top of things”. If I could only wrap my mind around all the things I need to get done!

In fact, I tried to do just that. I literally wrote down everything I needed to do so I wouldn’t be stressed over the things I was missing. Did it help? Somewhat, but something was still not right. I still didn’t have the determination or will power to actually “get on top of things.”

A few days ago, it hit me. What I was really experiencing was more than the daily stress of life. It was the lack of control over my situation.

I realized that I wasn’t in control. But it’s OK. Why? Because God is. Even though I can’t stand on top of my problems and stare them down, God has already conquered them. He knows my future. He can see the bigger picture. He’s not overwhelmed by the process, lost in the chaos.

He’s over it all.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

I take comfort in that, and I choose to trust Him.

Because that giant weight is off my shoulders, I’m free to go back living my life. I’m actually able to catch up on my studies and all the other things on my to-do list because I’m not worried about them anymore. How ironic!

Don’t be stressed out over all the things you need to get done. Instead, remember that God’s in control of it all. Do everything to the best of your ability and trust God with the rest.
