5 Christian Movies In Production 2017

There are so many great movies headed to theaters in the next few years! Here are some faith-based movies currently in production.

I Can Only Imagine

Release Date: 2018

From the Erwin Brothers (Mom’s Night Out, Woodlawn) comes the story behind the record-breaking song ‘I Can Only Imagine’. The movie follows the story of Bart Millard, the lead singer of the chart-topping Christian band MercyMe. At a young age, Bart lost his father to cancer, which inspired the song.

I Can Only Imagine stars Dennis Quaid (Soul Surfer) and Trace Adkins (Mom’s Night Out). The film was produced by Kevin Downes Productions and Mission Pictures International.

Fun fact: The film will feature Jake B. Miller and Nicole DuPort comprising the roles of Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant.

God’s Not Dead 3

Release Date: March 30th, 2018

God’s Not Dead 3 is obviously the second sequel to Pure Flix’s breakout feature film God’s Not Dead. There are few details known about the movie, to be released early 2018, but audiences there have been rumors that it will continue where the last film left off. After God’s Not Dead 2, there is a scene with David A.R. White being lead away by the police.

God’s Not Dead 3 will be produced by Pure Flix Entertainment.

Fun Fact: In early 2017, film director Tim Chey (known for his questionable marketing strategies) sued Pure Flix Entertainment for using his idea in the original movie. However, the courts ruled in Pure Flix’s favor.

HeavenQuest: A Pilgrim’s Progress

Based on the timeless tale of Pilgrim’s Progress, Heavenquest is a Christian fantasy movie currently being filmed in California. The movie stars Alen Powell (The Song) and Peta Sergeant. It is directed by Matt Bilen, who previously directed several films for Wanderlust Productions.

Heavenquest: A Pilgrim’s Progress is produced by King Street Pictures, and is expected to hit theaters in 2018.

Fun Fact: Heavenquest began as a Kickstarter campaign, but wasn’t fully funded. Therefore, the producers decided to cancel the film before it even started. All hope seemed lost until, apparently, the film was picked up by another production company!

Genesis in 3D

Release Date: TBD

The Genesis movie (currently untitled) has been in production for over 4 years. It’s a documentary-style film that tells the Biblical story of creation in a visually-rich way, featuring interviews with many of the top creationists of today. The film is approaching the stage of distribution, and are currently seeking funding for the release. Please pray for this film!

The Genesis movie is produced by Sevenfold Films.

The Star

Release Date: November 10th, 2017

From Sony Animation comes the classic story of Jesus – from the point of view of the animals. This beautifully animated film is the first faith-based animated film to be released by a major studio. It’s currently in post-production.

The Star will feature the voices of Zachary Levi (Flynn Rider in Tangled), Kristin Chenoweth (Rio 2), and Keegan-Michael Key (The Lego Movie).

Fun Fact: The Star will be released by Sony, which is also releasing the next Narnia film (Narnia: The Silver Chair), currently in pre-production.
