Mandisa’s latest album, Out of the Dark, is enjoyable to listen to, but also has a strong message of Christ’s redemptive power.
The album is complete with catchy beats, strong lyrics, and contributions from industry-leading artists such as TobyMac, Britt Nicole, Kirk Franklin, and Jeremy Camp.
As with all of Mandisa’s previous albums, Out of the Dark almost pure pop. However, it’s anything but typical. Lyrically, there is significant depth, and Mandisa chooses to stay away from the typical and overused sounds in the mainstream pop arena, sometimes even straying to a hip-hop/gospel sound. Some songs feature piano, and others have piano music.
Throughout the entire album, there is a consistent theme of darkness and light, reflecting Mandisa’s personal struggle with depression. In one of the songs, she says, “He lifted me up out of the pit. All glory to God!”
There’s also an undertone of hope. In her song entitled I’m Still Here, she says “the best is yet to come,” implying that God is not done with her yet, and there is hope for tomorrow.
In Unfinished, Mandisa modifies her claim in her hit single Overcomer from her previous album. She says that yes, we are overcomers, but God lets hard things happen in our lives to make us into masterpieces.
Overall, the album will not disappoint. Mandisa delivers once again!
