More Than a Smiling Face

Another like.

Another follower.

What have we become? How have we deceived ourselves? Have we become blinded to the world around us? We search for fame, safe behind a glowing screen. Nobody can know who I really am. Nobody can know who I really am!

That profile pic is not me. It’s really who I wish I was.

A portrait of perfection. An illustration of illusions. A photograph of fantasy.

Maybe you can relate to these words. You’ve probably already figured out what I’m referring to. I’m referring to social media.

But let me take a step back for a second. Social media is not evil. It’s an amazing new way of communication, an opportunity to brighten someone’s day. But I believe that social media has more fully revealed an aspect of our human nature: we long to redefine ourselves.

No one is more familiar with your shortcomings than you are. Failure after failure plagues you. You don’t perform well. Maybe you’re inconsistent. Maybe you hate looking in the mirror because those same insecurities nag at you day and night.

You’re broken.

Social media gives you a way out. For just a few minutes you can be a smiling picture. You can feel the love of a like. Nobody knows anything that you don’t reveal. You’ve redefined yourself.

Let’s take this to the extreme. Imagine you become an Instagram celebrity. You have a million followers and get 100K hearts on every photo you post. People love you. You’re popular. You’re loved.

But you’re not you.

It doesn’t matter if you use your real name on Instagram. It doesn’t matter if you have your real birthday or put a Bible verse in your bio. It isn’t you.

It will never. Be. You.

Jesus offers a better way out. For the rest of eternity you can be more than a smiling picture. You can have a joyous heart. You can feel the love of the Creator. You can be FULLY KNOWN! You can be fully loved by God Himself. You see, Jesus is the better way out. You can be redefined by His love. You can bear the name “Child of God.” You can be freed from all of your baggage and all of your sin.

You can be FULLY KNOWN! You can be loved by God Himself. @secondlymag Click To Tweet

Step away from the screen and into the world! This world is dying. It really is. You can be used by God in so many ways! Ask God to open your eyes to the homeless. Open your eyes to those with broken families. Open your eyes to your peers who struggle with suicidal thoughts. Open your eyes to those trapped by addiction. Open your eyes to the thousands upon thousands of innocent lives who die in their mother’s wombs! Open your eyes!

Being a child of God is greater than anything this world can offer.

And frankly, God wants to use you.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 1:12-13
