You may have heard the phrase “love is a verb.”
I think that saying has some truth in it. Love is more than a feeling. It involves the heart, soul, mind, and strength. The love we have for God isn’t stagnant. It grows as we pursue God and express our adoration for Him. When we truly love God, that love will result in actions and attitude that glorify Him.
Here are some ways to express our love to God!
By Obeying His Commandments
One of the most amazing things God has been teaching me recently is how I can express my love for God in simply obeying Him. It’s a continual battle to fight against my evil, selfish desires in ordered to align my actions with what God wants. I want to please Him, and so I do what He wants.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
1 John 5:3
One of my friends once told me that if I’m an authentic Christian, I will grow to love what God loves and hate what God hates. If we pursue God and strive to be like Him, we will naturally want to obey His commandments. It’s hard, but maybe that’s what makes it meaningful.
By Trusting in Him
Another way to express your love to God is to lean on Him in everything. Depend on Him. Invest your future in Him! In the Old Testament, kings were overthrown and empires ceased to exist because of one fatal flaw: pride. In Isaiah, the author writes this about Babylon, with parallels to the fall of Lucifer.
You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north’… But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit.
Instead of pridefully trusting in ourselves and attributing our successes to our own strength, we should find our confidence in Christ.
By Worshipping Him
This one is perhaps the most obvious. Pure worship. Recognizing His attributes and letting our love for Jesus overflow into singing, dancing, shouting. It doesn’t even have to be singing. Just pouring out ourselves to God because we love Him. When you’re in church or youth group, don’t just stand up and sing words with your mouth. Sing words of praise with your heart! Only then will God really care.
By Finding our Joy in Him
This world is full of theories of where joy is found. Some say it’s sex, others say it’s drugs or wealth. God loves it when we find joy and satisfaction in our relationship with Him! Cast everything aside and pursue God alone. He alone can fulfill your deepest desires! This, perhaps, encapsulates all the previous ways to express our love of God. We can find joy in obeying His commandments. We can find joy in trusting Him. We can find joy in worshipping Him.
God created us with the abilty to express our love toward Him and toward each other. Let’s use our creativity to praise Jesus in every way we can think of!
